Tracy was the first one up the next morning. Once she got dressed and
ready for that day, she went and woke her boys, telling
them to keep the noise level down, since Bo, Luke and Olivia were still
asleep.
It wasn't till about 8, about an hour after Tracy and the boys left,
that Bo did get up and come downstairs with Olivia. After
sitting her down in a high chair that was set up at the kitchen table,
he set about finding them something to eat.
A few minutes later as Bo and Olivia were eating breakfast, Luke came
into the kitchen, yawning and running a hand through
his hair.
"Morning Bo." Luke said as he made his way over to the coffee pot and
checked to see if the coffee was still hot.
"Morning Luke, sleep well?' Bo asked. "I guess Tracy and the boys already
left.
Luke nodded as he poured himself a cup of coffee. "Yeah, they left
probably a good hour ago."
Bo pushed the cereal box over in Luke's direction. "Here have some
Cherrioes."
Luke chuckled as he sat down with his cup of coffee. "Thanks." he said.
"So what would you like to do today?"
Bo helped Olivia take another bite of her bananna when he answered.
"I don't know. What is there to do here?"
Luke laughed. "Theres plenty." he said and then thought a second. "How
about i take you out and introduce you to the people i
work with and then mabye show you around L.A. a little bit."
"Sounds good to me." Bo said.
Luke nodded. "Alright. Lets finish breakfast first." he said.
They left the house about an hour later and drove out to the Fire Station,
Luke worked at.
"Hopefully, they haven't gotten any calls and they'll be there." Luke
said as he reached down and turned on his Police and Fire
scanner.
"So that lets you here whats going on with the police and stuff." Bo
said.
Luke nodded. "Yeah it does. Comes in handy."
Both men fell silent for a moment as they listened to the chatter on
the scanner, mostly just police at the moment.
They reached the firehouse about 15 minutes later and Luke pulled into
the parking lot and parked the Jeep Cherokee. "Here
we are." he said. "It looks like there here. I think you'll like these
guys."
"I'm sure i will." Bo said as he got out and opened the back door to
get Olivia out of her seat.
After he got her out, they walked around to the front and found everyone
just inside on of the garage doors in front of an
engine. About 4 were playing cards, what kind, Bo couldn't tell and
then there were two others standing back and watching.
One of them was a lady who appeared to be in her 30's with short brown
hair. One of the guys looked up from his cards as
Bo and Luke approached.
"Hey guys, look who's here." he said.
Everyone else looked up and there were a collection of 'hey lukes and
who do you have with you?'
"Hey ya'll." Luke greeted and turned to Bo. "This is the cousin i was
telling you about. This is Bo and his daughter Olivia."
"Hi Bo." Everyone said.
"Hi," Bo said
Luke pointed to the people sitting around the table first."Bo, that's
Tony..." he started, pointing to a relative young looking man.
Bo thought he might be in his 20's, probably early and probably a rookie.."Rick
or "Sarge" as we call him.." Luke pointed to
the guy sitting to Tony's right who nodded his head at Bo. He looked
to be about Luke's age and had a scar across his right
eyebrow and cheek "The other two are Chris and Kyle and the two standing
in front of the firetruck are Matt and Trish. There
are 3 others but i guess they aren't here right now."
"Nah." Tony said. "Their here, there just upstairs taking naps."
"Well its nice to meet you all." Bo said.
"Where's the chief?" Luke asked
Rick jerked a thumb over his shoulder. "He's inside doing some paper
work. You can go in, i'm sure he wouldn't mind
someone bothering him."
Luke nodded. "So who's winning?" he asked.
Tony laughed. "No one at the moment."
"How old is she?" Trish asked referring to Olivia.
Bo smiled and looked at his daughter who was sucking her thumb. "Olivia
will be a year next month."
"Where's the misses?" Kyle asked
"She's in Houston, looking into a job." Bo told him.
"Ah, Houston isn't that bad of a city. I use to live there." Matt told
him.
"I hate to interrupt but I want Bo to meet the chief." Luke said, breaking
into the conversation. "I'll bring him back in a few
minutes."
Everyone nodded their heads.
"Yeah the chief sorta needs to tell you something anyway." Rick said,
looking at Luke.
Luke raised an eyebrow. "What about?"
Rick shook his head. "I think you better here it from him."
"Ok," Luke said and looked back at Bo. "Come on."
Luke lead Bo inside the firestation and to the back, where the chiefs
office was. He knocked on the closed door and waited.
"Come in." someone said from inside.
Luke opened the door and came inside, Bo followed. "Hey chief. I was
in the neighborhood and i thought i would drop by and
let you meet my cousin."
"Oh hey Luke." the 40ish looking man said, putting down a pen and standing
up. He came around his desk and held out his
hand.
Bo took the hand and shook it. "Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Bo."
"I'm David." he said and then smiled at Olivia "And who might this
little one be?"
"This is Olivia, my daughter." Bo said.
David smiled at the little girl. "Just to think, my kids use to be
this age." he said, wistfully.
"How many do you have?" Bo asked.
"Three. My oldest is 24 and the youngest is 18." he said.
"Chief, " Luke interrupted. "Sarge, said that you had something you
needed to tell me."
David sighed. "Yeah and you aren't going to like this." he said. "The
building you inspected last night burned down."
"Oh shit." Luke said. "I was afraid you were going to say that.....Sorry
Olivia." he added, aploigizing to the little girl for the bad
word.
"Yeah and the cops called me and asked some questions. I told them
that you weren't doing this and i have no idea if they
believed me or not."
Luke nodded "Yeah, Enos talked to me yesterday and told me about the
same thing." he said. "I'm probably going to get
dragged in for questioning anyway."
"Nothing new for us." Bo said, grinning.
Luke looked at Bo and gave him a cute look."Your not making the situation
any easier." he said, with a trace of humor in his voice.
Bo grinned again, but didn't say anything further.
David was about to respond when the phone rang. He picked it up and
listened for a moment, then thanked whoever and hung
back up.He reached over to a box sitting on his desk that had several
buttons on it and pressed the one on the far right, setting
off an alarm. He looked back up at Bo and Luke and smiled apoligetically.
"Sorry guys, but theres a fire in the Wood Pine neighborhood. I've
got to go, ya'll can tag along if you want to."
Luke shook his head. "Not this time, i want to show Bo some sights
and then get back to the house before Tracy gets home."
David nodded "Alright, but your cousin's going to miss out." he said
grinning.
"I'll take a rain check." Bo said
"Ok, well i'll talk to you guys later." David said and half walked
and half ran out the door and Bo and Luke could hear him
shouting orders as he got outside.
"Come on, you have to see this." Luke said as he walked to the door.
He and Bo stood just outside of the office and watched as the firemen
and woman hurridly got there gear on and got on the
truck and then went roaring out of the firestation, sirens blaring,
making Bo have to cover Olivia's ears.
"Wow." He said as the siren faded into the background.
"Yeah." Luke said and smiled. "They are a great group to work with."
he said, with a hint of pride in his voice. "Come on."
He and Bo walked out of the firehouse and towards the parking lot.
"Tony looks pretty young." Bo said as they walked to the car.
Luke nodded "Yeah, hes 23, just out of school." he said. "A little
wet behind the ears, but hes a good kid. Remind's me alot of
you when you were younger."
Bo chuckled "I wasn't that bad." he said and laughed again. "So, why
do ya'll call Rick "Sarge?"
Luke didn't answer for a moment. "Rick was in Nam, just like i was
and he was also a Marine. Towards the end of his time
there, he was a sergent and the name just sorta stuck."
"Ahh." Bo responded and seeing that that subject upset Luke just a
little, he changed it. "So, you ever date Trish?"
Luke looked at Bo and snorted. "Actually, yeah i did." he answered
scratching his head. "She and i dated for about a month
shortly after i got here, but we broke it off since we really didn't
connect. She's a nice girl and is good at what she does, but we
jsut didn't really go togther to well."
They had reached the car and Luke turned the security system off and
Bo put his daughter back in her car seat and climbed in
the front where Luke was already, putting the keys in the ignition.
"So, where to from here? Shall we drive around some and then get some
lunch?"
"Yeah that sounds cool to me." Bo said.
Luke chuckled as he started the car. "You got it."
They got home around 3. Tracy was not home yet, but there was a cop
car and what looked to be Eno's cadillac parked in
front of the house.
"Uh oh." Luke said and went ahead and parked in the driveway.
"Just tell them you aren't doing any of it." Bo said.
"Yeah," Luke said as he got out and watched as Enos and two other cops
got out of both cars.
Bo got out as well but didn't open the door to get Olivia out.
"Enos." Luke said as he watched his friend walk towards him.
"Luke, i'm sorry to have to do this." he said and turned to the police
officers. One of them stepped towards Luke pulling a set
of handcuffs off his belt.
"Hey." Luke said. "Whats this about."
Enos sighed "Your under arrest for arson."
"Enos you have no proof that Luke is doing this." Bo protested. "Hes
innocent, you know that."
"Bo," Enos said. "Right now it looks like Luke is guilty. There has
been an a swiss account set up in his name and has alot of
money in it."
"What." Luke said as the police officer started putting the cuffs on
him. "Enos you don't have to cuff me."
Enos looked at Luke with a raised eyebrow. "Luke, i know you to well."
he said.
Luke sighed.
"Enos, you can't do this." Bo said. "Luke isn't setting these fires."
Enos sighed again and looked really unhappy as he said the next few
words. "You left the house last night at the same time the
building was being torched, unfortunatly that is making you look guilty.
Now stop fighting me and come on down to the station
and we can try and get this mess straightened out.
Luke nodded and started walking with the police officer to the police
car.
"Luke." Bo said
Luke stopped and looked back and shook his head. "Just follow us Bo."
he said
Bo was about to say more, but closed his mouth and shook his head.
He watched as Luke was put into the police car and then
he got into the drivers side of the Jeep Cherokee and followed the
police car and Enos to the Police Station.
Luke was taken down to the LAPD and put into a room and told that someone
would be with him shortly. Bo tried to get in there but Enos held him back
and told him he would have to stay out in the waiting area. While Bo waited
he called Tracy and she said she would be there as soon as she could.
About 15 minutes after Luke was put in the room, a cop came walking
in.
"Good Afternoon, I'm Detective Gary Hillburn." The seasoned Detective
said as pulled up a chair and sat in front of Luke. He was a young cop,
not much older than Luke. In fact, his height, build, and hair color were
all the same as Luke's except for the Detective's hazel eyes.
"I'm Luke Duke." Luke said wairly. "I would shake your hand but i can't
at the moment." he added, nodding his head at the handcuffs.
"I understand, well Luke, it seems that we got a problem..." Gary said
as he opened the file and read the reports on the four fires.
"I didn't set those fires, detective, if thats what your going to say."
Luke told him
Gary looked from the file to the fire Inspector. "According to this,
you weren't home or had no abili whatsoever for the times these fires were
set. Care to explain that?"
Luke sighed. "I was on call when the first two buildings burned, but
i don't remember where i was." he said. "The other two times, i got a page
about someone wanting to meet me to talk, but when i got to the meeting
place, no one showed up."
"I see...and the Swiss Bank Account with $75,000 in it?"
Luke shrugged. "I didn't know about any bank account until Enos told
me when he arrested me." Luke said evenly. "I didn't set it up."
Gary slammed the file down on the table and leaned forward to get in
Luke's face. "So I'm supposed to believe that you are innocent with evidence
like that?"
"I swear to you, i'm not involved in this. I don't know who is setting
me up or why, but i'm sure as hell not doing it."
Gary leaned back, letting the chair return to all 4 legs. "All of these
simple coincidences Luke? The 4 fires on your Inspection route, all within
days of you inspecting them. You not having alibis for the times and the
large amount of money appearing in a bank account you claim no knowledge
of.Do you see what I'm getting at? How can all of these things be
simple coincidences?"
Luke sighed, "I'm being set up." he repeated even though he knew it
was usless to try and explain since the dective already had him pegged
for this crime
"Do you know what the penalty is for crimes like these Luke?"
"No I don't" Luke told him. "But i'm sure its a prison term."
"It is...you could get 20 years for this Luke. 20 years. That's
how serious this is. You think about that and let me know when you are
ready to talk." Gary got up and knocked on the door, a uniformed cop opened
it and he left Luke alone.
Bo saw Gary come walking out of the room and walk over to an office
and disappear into it.
"Enos." Bo said getting his friends attention
Enos saw his friend and he went over to him. "What is it Bo?"
"Can i go talk to Luke?" Bo asked
Enos looked back at Detective Hillburn then back to Bo."That ain't
up to me Bo, that man is who you gotta talk to."
"He's probably going to say no." Bo said. "Come on Enos, just for a
few minutes."
"I can't give you permission for that Bo, just go talk to him. He's
a reasonable man, I'm sure he'll let you."
Bo sighed. "Alright." he said and walked over to the office the detective
had disappeared into a few moments before and knocked on the door
Gary was about to sit when he heard knocking, he got up and opened
the door. "Can I help you?" He asked Bo.
"Yeah, I'm Bo, Luke's cousin. " Bo told the man. "Is it alright if
i talk to him?"
"Ahh, Duke.. am I right?"
"Yes." Bo said
"One at time, you got 30 minutes before we move him to the LA County
jail." Gary said as he closed the door in Bo's face.
"Jerk." Bo said as the door closed on his face. Shaking his head, he
walked back over to where Enos and Tracy stood.
"Hey said we can go in there one at a time." Bo told them and then
sighed. "Also said we have 30 minutes to do it in, then they are going
to send him to the LA County jail."
Tracy swallowed hard and nodded her head. "Go talk to him first Bo."
Bo nodded. "It's going to be ok Tracy," he said trying to assure her
and himself at the same time.
He left them and walked over to the room they had Luke in and went
in. "Luke." Bo said as he entered, trying to get his cousin's attention
since his back was to him.
"Bo?" Luke said as he turned around a little, his face brightened when
he saw his cousin."Hey!"
Bo sat down in the chair the detective had just vacated. "Hey," he
said. "Are you ok?"
Luke shrugged his shoulders. "About as good as expected I guess, is
Tracy here?"
Bo nodded."Yeah, she's outside." he told him."She'll be in here in
a little bit...Luke, what's going on. What did that detective say?"
"He said that I'm charged with 4 counts of Arson that could get me
20 years. They said that there is a Swiss Bank account with $75,000 in
my name and I might as well confess since I don't have an alibi for any
of the fires. To be blunt, I'm in deep stuff Cousin."
Bo sighed. "Did you tell him that you have been set up?"
"Of course, but he said that if I am than how can all of that evidence
be coincidental, and frankly Bo if I was in his shoes I would think me
guilty too!"
Bo leaned back in the chair and ran his hands through his hair. "I'll
get you out of this. Whoever is doing this, has to be around someplace"
Luke shook his head."Bo how are you going to do that? You don't know
this city, it ain't like Hazzard and what about Olivia?"
Bo didn't say anything for a moment, finally he sighed. "We have to
do something Luke."
Luke sighed. "But what Cousin...that's the big question."
Bo shrugged. "I don't know." he said. "Would you like me to go get
Tracy?"
Luke looked at his Cousin and hesitated to answer. "I don't know if
she should see me like this Bo."
"I think you should talk to her Luke." Bo said and then shrugged. "But
its up to you."
Luke hung his head for a moment and nodded. "You're right, I
should talk to her. Go ahead and get her."
Bo nodded and got up out of the chair. He walked to the door, but then
paused and put his hand on Luke's shoulder and squeezed it. "We'll find
a way to get you out of this Luke. I promise."
"I know...thanks Cousin." He said looking at Bo with a small smile.
Bo nodded and then knocked on the door. The door opened and he left.
Once he was outside, he walked over to where Tracy and Enos stood.
"He want's to see you" Bo told her
Tracy took a deep breath and nodded as she told her sons to wait here
and went inside the room. She saw him and felt instant relief as she went
over to him and hugged him.
"Hey sweetheart." Luke said, as she hugged him
"What's happening Luke?" She said as she held him.
Luke sighed. "Their charging me with 4 counts of arson and they have
also informed me that their is a Swiss Bank account set up in my name for
$75,000." he said, wishing the handcufs were off and he could put his arms
around her.
Tracy sensed that he wanted to hold her close and she slipped in between
his arms. "A Swiss bank account? But Luke we never opened one! How can
they think you did this?"
"Their is no proof otherwise honey." he said. "I have no alibis for
the times that those buildings burned."
Tracy hugged him again and leaned her head against his chest. "What
are we going to do?" As the total hopelessness of the situation started
to prey on her mind and heart.
Luke sighed, he wanted to tell her that he had a plan, wanted to tell
her that everything was going to be alright, but he knew he couldn't do
that to her. "I don't know Trace." he said finally, "I just don't know."
There was a loud banging on the door that made Tracy look up with a
start. "All right time is up." The voice said.
I guess you better go." Luke said quietly
Tracy looked at Luke, her eyes growing wet. "I don't want to but I
guess I got no choice." She hugged him again and kissed him. "I love you
Luke."
"I love you to Tracy....always."
Tracy nodded as she ducked down and around Luke's handcuffed hands.
She tried to be brave as she looked at him once more before she left the
room
Bo watched Tracy come out of the room. "You alright?" he asked as she
came over to him.
Tracy shook her head as she kept her head down, not wanting the cops
to see her tears.
"Come here..." Bo said as he took her into a hug. "Its going to be
ok." he said after a moment.
Detective Gary and three uniformed policemen went into the room Luke
was in. Bo watched them, wondering what it was about. A few minutes later,
the door opened and the cops marched out, Luke was in between them, dressed
in bright orange and Bo gasped.
Tracy heard him and she let go of him and turned around. She saw the
love of her life looking like a walking tangerine and she put her hand
to her stomach, not feeling so good all of a sudden.
Bo put a hand on her shoulder to steady her. "Easy." he said
Gary went over to his desk and brought out a leather belt with two
sets of handcufs connected to it and a long chain. He handed it to the
three uniformed policemen began to put it onto Luke.
Tracy touched the hand on her shoulder. "Bo...what are they doing?"
"Their leg shackles." Bo said, between clenched teeth as he watched
the cops put the things on his Cousin.
"Leg shackles?" Tracy started to walk over there but Bo grabbed
her arm.
"No Tracy." Bo said. "Theirs nothing you can do."
The cops were finished and Luke finally turned and looked at Tracy.
"Okay Duke, let's go." Gary said as the three uniformed cops
took Luke by the arms and started to lead him away.
"Luke..." Tracy said as she tried to go to him.
"No Tracy." Luke said outloud and then mouthed the words. "I love you."
before turning a desperate look on his cousin
Tracy started to cry and tugged at the arm that kept her from going
to Luke. "No! They can't do this! You didn't do anything wrong!"
Bo put his other hand on Tracy's shoulder and turned her so she could
not see Luke anymore, he drew her to him and stroked her hair. "I know
Honey, I know. Shhh."
"Take care of her." Luke mouthed to Bo as he was led away
Bo nodded as he watched them take his cousin away
Tracy hugged Bo and started to cry against his chest. "Help him Bo
you gotta help him....please."
Bo sighed and looked over at where the boys were sitting with his daughter.
He knew Luke was right about him not knowing the city and all and what
would he do about Olivia, but yet, he still couldn't idly sit by while
Luke rotted away in prison. He sighed again. "I'll find a way to get Luke
out of his Tracy....I swear."
Shortly after Luke was led away, Bo and Tracy with the kids all went
home. Noone said much of anything and soon, it was dinner time.
Everyone sat around the kitchen table, mostly just picking at their
food and Bo was feeding Olivia who was the most unaffected by all this.
Bo was giving his daughter another spoonful of mashed potatoes when
there was a knock at the door. "I'll get it." He said as he set the spoon
down and wiped his hands.
He got up from his chair and went through the living room. He opened
the door and was surprised to see the face of his cousin-in-law. "Enos?
What are you doing here?"
Enos scratched his head. "Ah." he said. "Daisy threw me out of the
house."
Bo smiled for the first time in several hours and bit his lip, trying
not to laugh. "Didn't take the news of you arresting Luke too well huh?
Well come on in and have some dinner, I'll give Daisy a call."
"Thanks," Enos said stepping inside.
Bo closed the door and Enos followed him into the kitchen. He pointed
out a free chair for Enos to sit in as he once again started to feed his
daughter.
Tracy glared at Enos as he pulled out a chair and sat down across from
Mark and Brad. The two boys looked at their mother, frowning.
"Mom may we be excused?"
"Yes you may." She said without looking at Brad. The two boys put their
plates in the sink and disappeared out of the kitchen.
Enos could feel her eyes on him and he nervously cleared his throat.
"Tracy..." he started to say
"Enos?" She said in a less than friendly tone.
"Tracy, i'm sorry." Enos said. "It was my job to arrest Luke. I know
he isn't guilty but...there was no other way. I am sorry, please believe
me."
Tracy sighed and covered her face with her hands for a moment. "I know
Enos, I'm sorry, I know it isn't your fault."
"Well you aren't the only one who is upset at Enos, his wife tossed
him out. I gotta give her a call when I'm done feeding Libby here." He
made a face at her and the little girl giggled as he gave her another spoonful.
I don't think shes going to give in to you Bo." Enos said. "She's pretty
angry."
"I'm sure she is, but deep down she's gotta know it ain't your fault
Enos." Bo finished feeding Olivia and took a napkin and wiped the excess
food off of her face. "Good Lord Libby did you get anything in your mouth?"
He said as he smiled at her.
"Why don't you go give Daisy a call Bo, I'll give Olivia a bath and
get her ready for bed." Tracy said as she got up and lifted Olivia from
the high chair.
Bo nodded. "Alright." he said and walked over to the phone
Bo picked up the phone and dialed his cousin's number. The phone rang
twice before someone picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Hey Daisy, it's Bo."
"Oh...Hi." Daisy said. "I take it Enos is probably over there
and has told you i kicked him out of the house. Well...the answer is still
no....He isn't coming back here until Luke is released."
Bo sighed and looked towards the kitchen, Enos was right, she was very
upset. "Oh come on Daisy you know he had no choice."
Daisy sighed. "He still didn't have to do it." she said vehemently
Well think about it this way Daisy, if Enos hadn't done it, some stranger
would have! A stranger that could have easily roughed our cousin up a little.
So which is easier to take? Your husband arresting your cousin or some
high horse rookie throwing Luke down on the ground and cuffing him?"
Daisy didn't say anything for a moment, finally she sighed. "You've
got a point." she said.
"Well you ain't the only one upset right now Daisy, Tracy and the boys
were there when they took Luke to the County jail. They got to see him
looking like an orange popsicle in leg irons."
"Oh no." Daisy gasped. "Are they doing ok?"
"They weren't to happy to see Enos, maybe you should come down here
and see them.It would do the boys and Tracy good."
"Alright." Daisy said. "Let me leave Jessie with a friend and i'll
be over there...Mabye we can all sit down and figure out who could be doing
this."
Why don't you just bring Jessie? Tracy has a crib for Libby but I brought
the portable one, she can lay down or play in that."
"Alright." Daisy said. "I'll be there in 15 minutes."
"Okay bye Daisy."
"Bye." Daisy said and hung up the phone
Bo hung up the phone and went back into the kitchen where Enos was
sitting. "Daisy is on her way." He said as he started clearing off the
table.
Enos looked at Bo and raised an eyebrow. "What did she say?"
"I got her to see that you had no choice and that it could have been
worse. She seemed to get the point, her and Jessie are coming."
Enos sighed with relief. "Oh good."
"And I know what you are thinking, she ain't coming to skin your hide
Enos." Bo said as he put the perishables away and turned on the sink water
to rinse the dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Enos laughed nervously. "Well, you didn't see her when she kicked me
out."
Bo turned around from the sink and laughed. "I lived with her my whole
life, I've seen her mad Enos. Who do you think chased Luke and me with
a skillet when we told her about her car going over Kissing Cliff?"
Enos laughed. "Yeah, i had forgotten about that."
"Well Luke and me never have." Bo said chuckling to himself.
Bo rinsed all the dishes, put them in the dishwasher and started it.
He wiped down the table, stove and counters and washed his hands. The kitchen
was clean. He excused himself and told Enos he would be right back. Bo
climbed the stairs and peaked in the guestroom he and Olivia were sharing.
He saw Tracy putting his daughter in her crib and he smiled as he quietly
came into the room.
"Sweet isn't she?" Bo said as he came up behind Tracy and looked down
at his daughter.
Tracy gave a little gasp as she jumped. She turned towards Bo and put
a hand to her heart. "Lord, Bo. Don't scare me like that."
"Sorry, with a baby in the house, I've learned to be very quiet." He
leaned down and kissed his sleeping daughter on the forehead.
Tracy smiled, but the smile didn't quite touch her eyes.
Bo sighed and touched her shoulder, sensing that she was still upset
about Luke. "Hey come on now, Luke will be home soon, I promise."
Tracy patted the hand on her shoulder. "I hope your right Bo...Thanks."
she said and sighed. "Did you get a hold of Daisy?"
"She should be here any minute, so why don't we go downstairs." Bo
picked up the portable playpin he had brought and looked at Tracy.
"Just a sec." she said as she leaned into the crib and kissed Olivia
on the forehead and then made sure the blankets were around her good. She
stood back up and nodded to him and they both left the room quietly.
Bo and Tracy came down the stairs just as there was a knock at the
door.
"I'll get it." Bo opened the playpin and put it in the living
room and went to the door, he opened it and smiled as he saw his cousin
and Jessie.
"Hi Bo." Daisy said
"Hey Daisy." He kissed her cheek and hugged her. He saw Jessie and
he lifted her from Daisy's arms. "Hello Jessie! Come to your Uncle Bo!"
"Easy Bo." Daisy told him and caught sight of her husband near the
kitchen door. "Enos Straight..Come here."
Enos gulped when he saw his wife and he got out of his chair quickly
and went over to her. He was hanging his head, still ashamed that he had
to arrest his kin. "Yes Daisy?" He said in a low voice.
Bo took the baby into the living room and gently placed her in the
playpin, leaving Daisy and Enos alone to talk. Tracy followed Bo into the
living room
Daisy tried to look angry, but her face softened at the expression
on her husbands face. "Oh, Enos."
"I'm sorry Daisy you know that I would never arrest Luke like that
if I had a choice." He said, still not looking at his wife.
"I know Enos." Daisy said gently and smiled. "You can look at me."
Enos lifted his head and smiled at her. "So does this mean you ain't
sore at me anymore?"
Daisy looked at Enos for a moment and smiled again. "No, i'm not. Now
come here."
Enos went to his wife and hugged her, relieved that she wasn't mad
at him anymore. "I love ya Daisy, I wouldn't ever hurt you or make you
sore on purpose."
"Oh, Enos. I know." Daisy said and then broke the hug and took his
hand. "Come on, lets go in the living room and see if we can't figure something
out."
Bo saw them holding hands and he smiled. "Well I take it that Enos
doesn't have to sleep on Tracy's couch?"
Daisy giggled and looked at her husband. "No, he can come back home."
"Oh good, so what are we going to do about Luke?" Bo said as he looked
at Tracy, who was sitting beside him with a sad look on her face.
All four of them talked for the next several hours trying to come up
with who was doing this and how they were going to get Luke out of this.
Finally, after they didn't come up with much of anything, they called it
a night and Daisy and Enos went home.
Tracy went to bed not to long after that and Bo went into their study
and started looking for any clue he could find that might help clear his
cousin's name
Bo was searching through a folder that Luke had marked WORK. There
were Inspection forms and a severl copies of a map of a certain part of
LA. Bo sighed and tucked the folder back into the drawer. He opened another
drawer and saw a clipboard in there and picked it up, the same map was
clipped to it. "Humm...the same map..." He studied it for a while when
the study door opened.
"Bo." Tracy questioned as she came into the room. "Its 2 in the morning,
what are you still doing up?"
Bo was concentrating on the map. There was a street highlighted in
yellow, the name of it was Barton Blvd. He heard a voice and he looked
up to see Tracy. "Just trying to find some clue that could maybe help Luke."
"Have you found anything?" Tracy asked as she came over to the desk
and tried to get a look at what Bo was looking at.
"I don't know what it means right now, it's just a map on this clipboard
with Barton Blvd. highlighted." He set the clipboard down and rubbed his
eyes. "Maybe I should get some rest."
"I'm not sure what it means either." Tracy told him and grinned a little.
"He doesn't tell me everything."
"That's Luke for ya." Bo said as he yawned.
Tracy patted his shoulder. "You should go to bed. Otherwise you won't
be much help to Luke if you dead on your feet."
"Yeah, I better." Bo left the clipboard on the desk and clicked off
the little desk lamp as he and Tracy left the room.
Bo woke up a little past 9 when Olivia started to cry. He picked her
up out of the crib and changed her diaper. The map was still on his mind
and it suddenly occurred to him what it might be. He put his daughter back
into her crib and got dressed, he took her in his arms and went downstairs.
Bo set Olivia down in the portable crib as he tucked his navy blue
western shirt into his jeans. He picked up the phone and dialed Eno's work
number.
"Hello, LAPD" Enos answered on the third ring
"Enos, it's Bo, I got a quick question for you."
"Oh, good morning Bo." Enos said. "Sure, whats up?"
"Do you know the area where those buildings burned? Maybe the street
names?"
"Detective Hillburn, gave me a copy of the reports." Enos said as he
reached over and picked up a file with the copy of the reports in them.
He opened it and looked at it for a moment. "There all on one street."
"All on just one street? What street?"
"Barton Blvd." Enos said, reading the name off the report
"Barton Blvd? Enos let me call you back in five."
Enos frowned a little. "Alright Bo."
Bo hung up the phone and went back into the study. He picked up the
clipboard and shook his head. "Barton Boulevard." He flipped the map up
and saw a listing of addresses, all of them on that same street. "This
has to be Luke's inspection route." He reached across the desk and picked
up the cordless phone, he dialed Enos' number again.
"Hello." Enos said as he answered the phone on the first ring. "Bo?"
"Yeah it's me Enos. In that report, does it have the addresses of the
buildings that burned?"
Enos looked at the report. "Yes, it does have addresses here." he said.
"Its, 5567, 5568, 5569 and 5570."
Bo grabbed a pen and checked off the first 4 buildings listed on Luke's
route. "Just 4 of them right?"
"Yes." Enos answered.
Bo circled the 5th building, 5571 and set the clipboard down on the
desk. "All right Enos, thanks a lot. You've been a big help."
"Your welcome." Enos said and then frowned. "Just don't do anything
foolish. If your thinking something, let the police know before you doing
anything."
"I ain't sure about anything yet Enos, I'll talk to you later."
"Alright Bo." Enos said and hung up
Bo hung up the phone and took his daughter into the kitchen to feed
her. He made her some baby cereal and started feeding it to her. He had
this nagging feeling that he should check out that 5th building.
The feeling would not go away and as he gave Olivia more cereal, he
decided that he had to go check it out, for Luke's sake.
A short time later Olivia was fed and dressed and playing in the playpin.
Bo went into the study and ripped the map from the clipboard and looked
at it. It gave pretty good instructions on how to get to Barton Blvd and
the sunlight streaming through the windows caught his ring. He saw the
glimmering gold of his wedding ring and he took it off his finger and set
it down on the clipboard. He tucked the map into his pocket, picked up
his daughter and went to go check out Barton Boulevard.
A few minutes later, Bo was at Enos's and Daisy's house. He walked up
to the front door and rang the bell. Daisy came to the door a few moments
later, holding Jessie in her arms. "Hi Bo."
"Hey Daisy, I'm sorry to drop in on you like this but could you watch
Libby for me for a while?"
Daisy smiled. "Sure, not a problem." she said. "Bring her in."
Bo smiled and brought his daughter in, he sat her down on the floor
of the living room and picked up a nearby doll and gave it to her. "Now
you be a good girl for your Aunt Daisy, Libby and Daddy will be back soon."
He kissed his daughter on the forehead and turned around. "Thanks Daisy,
I really appreciate it."
"Not a problem Bo." Daisy said as she smiled. "So, are you going to
go visit Luke?"
Bo was about to tell his Cousin no, but then he realized that she would
worry about him. "Yeah, I'm going to see Luke."
Daisy nodded. "Well tell him we are all thinking about him and we want
him to come home soon."
"I will Honey, see you later." Bo smiled at his cousin and left.
Tracy had gone to school that morning, but as the morning wore on, she
found she couldn't concentrate and decided to call in a substitute and
go home.
As she pulled into the driveway, she noticed that the Jeep Cherokee
was missing and she wondered where Bo could have gone. She parked the van
in her usual place and got out and went inside the house.
"Bo?" She said as she looked around the house, including upstairs.
She went into the study and saw the clipboard. She saw something on it
and she went over to the desk. It was a wedding ring. She picked it up
and recognized it as Bo's. "Oh Lord....what has he gone and done?"
After Bo left Daisy's he followed the map and made his way to 5571 Barton Blvd within 30 minutes. As he drove down the street, he saw the burned out shells of four buildings and he shook his head angrily. He saw 5571 and parked the car. He turned off the ignition and got out. He looked up and down the street, seeing if anybody was around, and he didn't see anyone. Taking a deep breath he walked up the steps and went inside the building.
Tracy put the ring down and picked up the phone, thinking that there
was only one place he could take Olivia too. She dialed Daisy's phone number.
"Hello?" Daisy answered, sounding somewhat distracted
"Daisy this is Tracy, do you have Olivia?"
"Yes i do." Daisy said and frowned, instantly sensing something
was wrong. "Why? What's wrong?"
"I found Bo's wedding ring here on Luke's desk and the map that was
on it is gone. I think that Bo has gone off to do some investigating on
his own."
"Are you sure? He said he was going to go see Luke.." Daisy trailed
off, shaking her head. "I should have known better than to believe what
he told me. You should call Enos..I'm coming over there."
"Daisy you got the two babies! Wouldn't it be easier if you stayed
there?"
"I'll be fine Tracy." Daisy said as she laughed. "I'll be over
there in a few minutes. Go ahead and give Enos a call."
Tracy sighed and nodded. "All right, just be careful. I'll call Enos.
See ya soon Daisy."
"Bye." Daisy said and hung up
"Bye." Tracy hung up and pressed the speed dail for Enos's office.
"Hello, LAPD. Enos Straight speaking."
"Enos this is Tracy, have you talked to Bo today?"
"Yes i have." Enos said and then sighed, figuring it out before she
said anything. "What'd he go and do?"
"I don't know, all I know is I can't find him, all I have here
is his wedding ring and he took Olivia to Daisy. PLEASE tell me you might
have a clue as to what he is up to?"
"Well, he called me earlier and asked some questions about the buildings
that have burned..So, he probably found something out and went to go check
it out after i told him not do anything foolish." Enos told her
"Well if he is like Luke, he didn't listen." Tracy sighed and put her
hand to her forehead. "Damn it I wish Luke was here, he'd know what to
do."
Enos sighed and thought about it for a moment. "Let me see what i can
do, but i'll try and get him released to my custody and if i can, he and
i will be out to the house in a little while."
Tracy brightened suddenly. "You think you will be able to?" She said
excitably.
"I can give it a try." Enos told her
"Daisy is on her way with Jessie and Olivia, I hope to see you
and Luke soon."
"Alright." Enos said. "Talk to you soon."
"Bye Enos.. and thanks..."
Bo walked around the interior of the building, it was an old warehouse
and there were bits of old crates and timber everywhere. There was an office
at the top of some old shaky looking steps and Bo thought he heard someone
up there. He made his way over to the less than sturdy looking staircase
and climbed up it.
The office was enclosed in glass and Bo crouched down and went around
the side and peaked in one of the dirty windows. He saw two men talking
and he got closer to the window so he could hear what they were saying.
"The boss says after we burn the rest of the buildings on this block,
he'll give us a cut of the money."
"Yeah and I hear from my source downtown they got some Fire Inspector
up on charges, nice huh?" The other one said.
"Very nice. He'll just be blamed for the rest of these and we can get
away scott free."
Bo scowled as he watched them, he was not about to let them get away
with it. He stood up and was about to walk around to the door to confront
them both when there was this terrible pain in the back of his head and
everything faded into darkness.
Enos parked his car in the visitors parking at the L.A. County Jail.
He got out and went inside. He stopped at the desk and showed his badge
to the guard on duty
The guard saw it and smiled in politeness. "Is there something I can
help you with Sergeant?"
"I'm here to get the prisoner Luke Duke." Enos told him as he put the
badge away. "He's been remanded to my custody."
The guard was a young man, not much younger than Luke. "Do you have
the papers with you?"
"Yeah, " Enos said as he got the papers and handed them to the guard
The guard took them and looked them over. He got the sign in sheet
from under the counter and slid it over to Enos. "They are in order, if
you will sign this Sergeant I will bring you your prisoner."
Enos nodded and signed the form
The guard tucked the clipboard back under the counter and went to go
get Luke.
Enos sighed and leaned against the desk as he waited for the guard
to bring Luke out. After a moment he started tapping his fingers against
the top of desk.
The guard came back, after what seemed like an eternity, with Luke.
"Sergeant come to the gate please." He said as he and Luke stood next to
a set of bars.
Enos walked to the gate
Luke smiled when he saw him and he tried not to show how relieved he
was to see his kin. The guard pressed a button and the barred gate slowly
slid open.
"Sergeant do you wish to cuff this prisoner?"
Enos shook his head. "No, i can handle him."
The guard nodded and motioned for Luke to go ahead. Luke nodded and
stepped through the gate.
"Hey Enos, I'm glad to see you Buddy." He said as he had the most overwhelming
urge to hug Enos
Enos grinned and then jerked his head towards the door. "Come on, lets
go."
"Yes sir." Luke said as he grew serious and followed the Sergeant out
the door.
Once they were outside, Enos stopped and turned to Luke. "Are you ok?
They treat you alright?"
"Yeah I was in a cell by myself." He looked at Enos and started to
laugh. "But I gotta admit that I'm glad to see you."
Enos laughed a little. "I'm sure you are, but we have another problem."
he grew serious again.
"What is it?" Luke said as he saw how upset he was. "Is it Tracy?"
Enos shook his head. "No, she's fine. Its Bo. He's missing and i think
he's gone and taken matters into his own hands."
"Bo is missing? Oh Lord...we better get home so I can change and then
we'll go look for him?" Luke sighed and rubbed his face. "Any idea what
he was doing or going?"
Enos started walking towards his car as he spoke. "He called me this
morning and asked about the buildings that had burned. I told him not to
do anything foolish and he said he wouldn't." Enos stopped and shrugged.
"Tracy came home and found he wasn't there and that he had left his
wedding ring behind and Olivia over at my house."
Luke sighed and got into Enos' car. "That sounds like Bo, going
off on his own like that. Come on we better burn rubber to my house before
something happens to him."
"You got it." Enos said as he started the car and pulled out of the
parking lot
"So who do we have here?" One of the guys said as Bo's unconscious form
was brought into the office by the third arsonist.
"I don't know Matt. He was outside listening in, doesn't appear to
be cop."
"The last thing we need is some spy ruining all of our plans." Jake
said as he dropped Bo onto the old ripped up couch.
"So, what should we do with him." Billy asked
Matt sighed and looked around. "Well, I think I know of a way to cover
our tracks, including this little spy." He said with a smile.
Enos made it to Tracy's in just under 15 minutes. He had turned on his
flashing lights that sat on his dash board and turned on the siren, which
made getting through traffic easier.
He pulled into the driveway and stopped the car. "Tracy is going to
be glad to see you." He told Luke as they got out
"I know she will." Luke said as he walked up the sidewalk and rung
the doorbell.
The door opened a moment later and Tracy stood there. She saw Luke
and her face lit up. "Luke!" she exclaimed
"Hey Honey, did you miss me?" He said with a sweet smile.
Tracy smiled back and stepped out to give him a hug. "Yes i did. Very
much."
Luke put his arms around her and drew her to him, relieved that he
was home. He saw Daisy standing in the entry way and he smiled at her.
Enos cleared his throat. "Um, i really hate to break this up, but we
need to go find Bo."
Luke nodded and let go of Tracy. "Yeah, just let me get changed and
get my address sheet."
"I think he took that with him." Tracy told him
Luke gave Daisy a quick hug and went into his study, he saw the clipboard
and the address list. "No, he took the map, look he even circled 5571.
I bet you that's where he is."
"I hope he's ok." Daisy said
"So do I...so we can kill him for running off and scaring us." Tracy
said as she put her arm around Daisy's shoulder.
Luke went to change his clothes and he came down the stairs in a black
t-shirt and black jeans. "Me and Enos are going to Barton Blvd, you two
stay here."
Tracy shook her head. "No, i'm coming with you. I want to help."
Luke shook his head. "No it could be dangerous, I think it'd be best
if you stay here and help Daisy with Olivia and Jessie." He took her hands
and held them. "I'll be fine but Bo might not be if we don't hurry."
"Alright. Just be careful." She said and kissed him
"We will be fine." Luke kissed Tracy's lips and he kissed Daisy's cheek.
"Ya ready to go Enos?"
Enos nodded. "Lets go."
Luke nodded his head and he and Enos started for the door, they passed
the living room and Luke saw Olivia. He went over to the little girl and
picked her up, he hugged her and set her back down. "Don't worry Honey
I'll bring your Daddy home." He said as the two men left the house.
Jake, Matthew and Billy were downstairs, splashing gasoline, kerosene
and heating oil all over the first floor of the building. Billy took his
gas can and poured the gas on the stairs as he went upstairs towards the
office. He made a circle of the fuel around the office and peaked in at
the still unconscious Duke.
It's BBQ time!" He said as he looked down at the other two men. "You
ready?"
"Lets do it." Jake told him
Billy nodded and came down the stairs. He and his two friends walked
to the door as Billy took a small flare gun out of his pocket. "Okay stand
back."
The three men stepped back as Billy pointed the flare gun at the chemically
soaked floor and turned his face away. He pulled the trigger and the flare
shot out of the barrel and into the building. The flare hit the far wall
and bounced off, landing on the ground, it started shooting sparks and
Billy smiled.
"It won't take no time to catch, let's get out of here." He said as
he closed the door.
"Yes, lets." Jake said
Luke and Enos drove quickly in the direction that Luke directed them
in. Enos had his scanner on and they were listening to it as they drove
"Attention any units in the area, attention any units in the
area, report of burning building located at 5571 Barton.. repeat 5-5-7-1
Barton Blvd. Respond any unit in the area..." The voice said over the scanner
and Luke and Enos looked at each other.
Enos reached over and picked up the CB. "This is Lincoln 9, I'm in
the vicinity and I'm responding. Have reason to belive someone might be
in the building, need ambulance."
"Copy that Lincoln 9er, will send emergency vehicles to your location,
exercise extreme caution."
"Copy that. Over and out." Enos said and put the CB down and looked
over at Luke. "You ok?"
"I don't know...if Bo is in that building and it's on fire..."
He said as he shook his head. "I think you better drop the hammer on this
car Enos."
Enos nodded and put the gas pedal all the way to the floor
Enos pushed his car as fast as it would go, as they approached Barton
Blvd, the smoke could easily be seen and as they turned to go down to 5571,
the sight of the building in flames and Luke's black Cherokee, made the
hearts of both men freeze in their chests.
"Oh God he's in there!" Luke said as he got out of the car fast
and ran over to the door. He threw it open and saw that most of the floor
was burning but he didn't care, he went in anyway.
"Luke wait! Take this!" Luke came back out and went over to Enos.
He went to the trunk and handed Luke a big fire extinguisher. "This will
help."
Luke took it and ran back inside the building, he started to spray
the floor as he looked for his cousin. "BO!" He yelled as he made his way
through.
Luke was spraying everything in sight, the heat was terrible and the
thick smoke was burning his eyes. He finally saw the stairs leading to
the office, they were burning and he put out each step out as he climbed
them. He made it to the top to another wonderful sight, the office was
surrounded by a thick ring of fire. Luke went to spray the door and he
was horrified to discover that the fire extinguisher was empty.
"DAMN IT!" He said as he saw that the only thing that was not majorly
burning was a window. He lifted the extguisher over his head and hurled
it as hard as he could as the window, breaking it.
The window shattered and Luke took a few steps back and jumped into
the hole. He saw his cousin lying on an old rickety couch, he was tied
up and he went to him and tried to wake him.
"Bo.. can you hear me?" He said as he touched his cousin's neck.
He felt the strong thumping against his fingers and he grabbed Bo by the
collar and put him over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
The building was beginning to fall apart and pieces of burning wood
was starting to fall. Luke held onto Bo tight as he jumped back through
the broken window and started to descend the stairs. They had caught on
fire again and as Luke went down them they started to creak and move.
Luke stopped suddenly, looking over at how high they were off the ground.
He prayed silently that they would hold at least until they got closer
to the ground. He started down them again and they started to sway under
the extra weight.
Luke held his breath and decided to go for it, he started going down
the stairs fast and he was almost to the ground when the staircase crumbled
like a deck of cards, sending him and his cousin tumbling to the ground.
Bo came off of Luke's shoulder and rolled a few feet, but Luke took the
brunt of the fall. He hit the ground hard and his right leg hit the broken
remains of a crate. He felt the bone give as he landed on his side.
Luke was dazed for a moment, but he came out of it quick as sharp pain
went up his leg. He looked around and saw Bo, he grabbed him by the leg
and pulled him. Luke tried to get up, but his leg screamed. He started
to crawl towards the door calling out to Enos.
Enos was outside when he heard Luke calling for him. He grabbed the
extra fire extinquisher out of the trunck and went in. He saw Luke crawling
towards him. "Luke! Are you ok?" Enos asked
"I'm fine, I think I broke my leg. Get Bo out of here!"
Enos nodded and handed the fire extinguiser to Luke and went over to
Bo and put him over his shoulder. "I'll be back for you." Enos told Luke
as he started for the door.
Enos went outside and laid Bo down on the sidewalk away from the building
and ran back inside to Luke. "Lets get out of here." Enos told him as he
went behind Luke and put his hands under his arms and lifted him to his
feet
"Easy does it Enos." Luke said as he put his arm around Enos' shoulder
and leaned against him as he hobbled out of the building "I want to make
sure Bo is okay."
Enos nodded and helped Luke over to where his cousin lay
"He was upstairs in the office." Luke said as he sat beside Bo and
began untieing the ropes that bound him.
At the same time an ambulance, a cop car, and two firetrucks pulled
up to the building. The firemen grabbed their hoses and started putting
it out as Luke tried to wake his cousin.
The ambulance opened and two EMTs rushed out of it and over to Luke. They
opened both of their medical kits and opened Bo's shirt and checked his
heart.
"I got a strong pulse partner, let's put the mask on him and give him
some O2."
"You got it." The second EMT turned the valve on a small oxygen tank
and lifted Bo's head and stuck it over his nose and mouth. The moment they
did Bo moved his head a little and his eyes opened part ways.
"Bo?" Luke asked. "Can you hear me?"
Bo was coming around more and he tried to take the mask from his face.
"No don't mess with that." One of the EMTs said as they adjusted it
back over his nose and mouth.
"Easy Bo." Luke said
Bo tried to say something but he closed his eyes again as they brought
the stretcher over. They loaded Bo onto it and put him inside the ambulance.
The second EMT guy came over and looked at Luke. "Are you all right? Did
you hurt anything?"
Luke nodded. "I think i broke my leg." he said
The EMT took out his flash light and tested Luke's pupils."Which leg?"
"My right." Luke said
The EMT touched it and went down, he could feel that the bone
was broken. "Yup, and did a good job too. Come on let's get you to the
hospital so we can check you out completely."
The EMT hauled Luke onto his feet and with the help of Enos, Luke was
placed in the ambulance that Bo was in.
"Here you go, just sit down there on that little bench." The EMT said
as he looked towards the front. "Okay let's roll."
Luke looked at Enos, who was standing outside, as he sat down."Call
the girls and tell them to meet us at the hospital." he said
Enos nodded his head as he closed the doors to the ambulance and tapped
on the back. The ambulance started to pull away and Enos went to his car
and got in.
Enos started his car and followed the ambulance, he picked up the CB.
"Station this is Lincoln 9er."
"Go ahead Lincoln 9er."
"I need you to patch me into the telephone, the number is 485-5048."
"Stand by Lincoln 9er."
Enos heard the sound of the dial tone on his CB mike and the phone
began to ring.
"Hello?" Tracy said on the second ring
"Tracy this is Enos."
"Enos," Tracy said, relief evident in her voice. "Whats going on? Did
you and Luke find Bo?"
"Yeah we did, there was a fire here on Barton and Bo was inside the
building, I'm behind the ambulance that has both Bo and Luke in it."
Tracy gasped. "Are they alright?!"
"Bo was unconscious and Luke broke his leg, but other than that they
are okay, you better get to Cedars-Sinai."
Tracy breathed a sigh of relief "Alright Enos. Daisy and I will be
there shortly....Thank you for calling me."
"Okay Tracy, see you soon."
"Bye." Tracy said as she hung up the phone
"Station this is Lincoln 9er... the channel is clear."
"Roger that Lincoln 9er, station out."
